Why take Latin?
"The study of Latin is also the study of history, art, music,
theatre, philosophy, law, literature, laboratory science and more!"
Teresa Hudkins,
Willamette University
This isn't your grandma's Latin. Studying Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek) in the modern world far surpasses reading the words of a few old dead guys! Northwest students aren't just learning a language, they are exploring the amazing history, literature, philosophy, and culture of Ancient Rome. Here are our top 10 reasons for why you should study Latin at Northwest Guilford High School:
1. The study of Latin opens the door to many other subjects. As stated above, our Latin classes include history, mythology, culture, and other topics that expand our students' minds far beyond the words on a page.
2. Latin enhances students' writing in English both by expanding vocabulary (60% of English words come from Latin), and by giving students extensive practice with grammatical structures that still apply in English today. (SATs, anyone?)
3. Can Latin help students in math? ABSOLUTELY! Studies show that Latin students have an increased capability when it comes to problem solving and logical thinking. Yet another way to boost those SAT/ACT scores!
4. Latin can be a great preparation for those students considering medical or law school...but you've probably heard that once or twice before.
5. Forget memorizing useless phrases-- Latin I students hit the ground running by learning GRAMMAR structures from the beginning. This helps them truly understand the language, thus building a strong foundation for their continued study.
6. Learning Latin will pave the way for learning other Romance Languages in the future (Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, Portuguese...)
7. When it comes to College applications, Latin really stands out! DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!!
8. Our Latin Club (Junior Classical League, or JCL) is a fun and exciting way to get more involved. Come build a chariot with us! Who doesn't need more extracurricular activities?!
9. You will finally understand the spells in the Harry Potter books! J.K. Rowling studied Classics and used many Latin words to craft her imaginative spells.
10. What do Steven Colbert, Bill Clinton, and Coldplay's Chris Martin have in common? They all studied Latin, as did many other famous people! Join the club!
